Wings on a Flea

Title: The Wing On A Flea: A Book About Shapes

Author: Ed Emberley

Recommended Grade Level: 2nd but anywhere from Pre-k to 3rd

Common Core Mathematics Standards Addressed: Geometry. Reasoning with shapes and their attributes. Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.

Summary: This book is great a great read for grades pre-k to 3rd. It can be used as an intro to shapes and also as a way to show how to put basic shapes together to make more complex pictures. It has many pictures made primarily of shapes and rhyming text. At the end, there's a section that shows how to put shapes together to make a picture, such as a flea or clown.

Rating: I give this book a 5 out of 5.

Classroom Ideas: Another way to use this book is introducing students to making their own “Shape people” for younger grades or “shape Town” activities for the older students. This activity could also eventually be followed by a tangram lesson.
